SCHOOL WORK AN EXCELLENT DISPLAY. ("Times-Age” Special.) There was a large attendance of parents at the Greytown School yesterday afternoon when the work done by the pupils during the year was on display. The quality and variety of the handwork was most favourably commented on. Displays of folk dancing and drill were given by different classes. In addressing the gathering, Mr S. C. Shedden (headmaster) expressed his pleasure at the interest shown by the parents in the school work. He also congratulated the pupils and staff on the work done during the year. The chairman of the committee (Mr H. G. Carter) presented the Dux Gold Medal to Hughla McPhee. Special prizes were also presented to April Thompson and Georgina Dickens
THE CENTENNIAL LOCAL ARRANGEMENTS. A meeting of the general committee of the Greytown Centennial celebrations was held in the Council Chambers last night. The Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton) presided. Also present were: Mesdames A. W. Horton, W. J. Knell, J. F. Thompson, Miss Keddell, Messrs T. Tully, J. Wood, J. F. Thompson, H. Farley, G. Robinson, and S. Shedden, Mr J. F. Thompson outlined the cavalcade of the progress of Greytown to be inacted at the Memorial Park on the afternoon of Saturday, February 17. The Maori early settlements would be first enacted, then the arrival of the first settlers and surveyors and also first mail service. The first farming and butter-making efforts would be depicted and also the old methods of transport and the modern aeroplane. The native bush in the park would be used as a background for the stage setting and carts and lorries would pass across this setting depicting the progress of the century. The following committees were appointed:—Executive, Messrs A. W. Horton, J. Kiernan, J. F. Thompson, W. A. Tate, H. G. Carter, F. C. Bunny, H. C. Trotman; pagant director, Mrs J. F. Thompson; costume director, Miss C. G. Keddell; commentator, Mr J. F. Thompson: marshall, Mr H. G. Carter. The following are the chairman of committees with power to add: — Maoris, Mr G. Te Whaiti; Pioneers, Mr H. J. Farley; First Farming, Mr N. Skeet; Agricultural, Mr R. R. Tilson; Harvesting, Mr O. Skeet'; Fruit Growing, Mr F. C. Bunny; First Church, the Rev. Blornfield; Dairying, Mr H. McPhee; Schools, Mr S. C. Shedden; First Hospital and Nurses, Mrs F. C. Bunny; Sports Bodies, Mr Trevor Tully; Military, Mr J. W. Barnard; Fire Brigade. Mr J. Wood; Rest Room, Mr W. A. Tate; Ladies. Mrs A. W. Horton and Mrs Knell; Choir, the Rev. Harkness; Municipal, Mr A. W. Horton; Decorations, Mr H. G. Carter. The cavalcade of the first church is to be left to the Rev. Harkness to arrange.
It was decided to instal loud speakers in the park. Owing to the organiser, Mr R. G. Vile, not being present on account of illness, several matters of policy were held over.
It vzas suggested that the new rest room be officially opened at 11 a.m. The pioneeps’ luncheon is to be from 12 to 1.30 p.m. and gathering at the Park at 2.30 p.m.. It was decided that those who were resident prior to 1880 in Grey town and district be invited to attend the luncheon. A.n effort is to be made to secure the presence of the Governor-General, cabinet ministers and members of. Parliament at the gathering.
