BOROUGH COUNCIL
MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Borough Council was held on Monday evening. There were present: The Mayor, Mr C. W. Skill, Councillors M. N. Hardie (treasurer), C. R. Holmes, G. P. Cotter, W. H. Corfield, D. J. Green, P. R. Plummer and M. Mulvaney. Leave of absence was granted Councillors Gundrie and Hamilton. Accounts amounting to £297 4s were passed for payment. In connection with the centennial public swimming baths, a letter was received from the Health Officer stating that the proposed water supply was unsatisfactory and that another source must be obtained. The Works Committee reported it would be advisable to fill the baths from the town mains. This was agreed to. A shortage of water in the north end of the town was reported by several ratepayers, so it was resolved that restrictions be enforced after public notice had been given. The Lighting Committee was authorised to erect decoration lights in the Square for the holidays. It was decided that the supply of dog collars for 1940 be procured. The Overseer reported having laid poison at the dump. The water mains had been flushed and general work done. The Town Clerk was granted the usual annual holiday in December and January. The ranger reported having dealt with 9 head of stock during the month. The next monthly meeting was fixed for January 15.
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE
MONTHLY MEETING. Mrs Lamb presided over a good attendance at the monthly meeting of the Martinborough Women’s Institute. The members stood in two minutes silence as a mark of respect to the memory of Mrs Albert Smith, who was one of the oldest members of the Institute. After the business of the meeting had been dealt with the Tuturumuri school children entertained with plays, singing and action songs which were much appreciated by those present. Competitions were won by Mrs M. N. Hardie and Mrs S. Boyd, and the monthly competition was won by Mrs S. Chapman. Mrs J. Lamb gave an interesting demonstration of Christmas cake making, for which she was accorded a hearty vote of thanks. The next meeting is to be held in February and will take the form of a Garden Party at Mrs S. Davidson’s residence.
RADIO CLUB
ANNUAL "BEANO.” On Monday evening the Radio Club held their annual "beano,” which, owing to the inclement weather prevailing was not so well attended as in previous years. Nevertheless a very pleasant time was spent. Several toasts were honoured and responded to. During the evening a two minutes silence was observed as a mark of respect to the memory of those members of the club and other radio listeners throughout New Zealand who had died during the year. Mr R. J. Wright read the balance sheet and annual report which showed that the club have had a very successful season. He thanked the outgoing committee for their help and co-opera-tion during the year and wished the incoming committee every success. Mr Wright also expressed the hope that some of the members would be able to attend the annual Convention to be held in Wellington this year and which would commence on December 30. He then called on Mrs D. Lamb to present the trophies to the winners of the competitions as follows:—Receiver construction, Bruce Kelly; D.X. transmitting, S. M. Bell; D.X. non-transmit-ting, Miss J. Grant; most members elected, Miss S. Broughton; morse, T. Duffy; gadget, R. J. Wright; diary, Miss J. Grant; lecture, S. M. Bell. Pre-Wedding Party. A delightful party was tendered by the Badminton Club to Mr Owen Grant, the popular secretary, in honour of his approaching marriage. The party was held at the home of Mr Geo. Simpson. A pleasant time was spent playing bridge and popular games. After supper parcels were opened and congratulatory speeches made.
