CHILDREN’S GARDENS RESULTS OF JUDGING.’ ("Times-Age” Special.) In connection with the Carterton District High School’s home gardens competition, fourteen gardens were cultivated and presented foi' judging on Monday. ’ All were visited and judged, except that at Dalefield of Russell Sayer, which was not approachable on account of the heavy rain and flooded condition of the local river. Mr H. W. Hesse, Supervisor of Agriculture, Wellington Education Board.’ reported that the gardens were well forward, the general quality of the vegetables being better than that seen for the last two years. The attention to detail, educational value, and utility value of the garden projects was worthy of commendation, while the record books showed work of a high standard. Eleven boys gained certificates of merit, obtaining 80 per- cent or over, of marks in the judging, while no less than seven were excellent, obtaining 90 per cent. The details of judging, showing the points awarded in each case, are as follow (the figures relate to the following section —(1) choice of crops, arrangement and spacing (2) earthwork, manuring and soil condition; (3) condition of the crops grown; (4) thinning, transplanting, earthing, weeding, etc; (5) tying, staking and general attention given; (6) utility value of the crops raised; (7) educational value: neatness parallel rows, edges, labels, etc; (8) notebook records; (9) originality shown; (10) allowance for overcoming difficulties): —Keith Kennedy (Belvedere), 20, 9£. 91, 91, 91, 9,5, 15, 41, 4J, total 96. place 1. TENNIS CLUB COMPETITIONS STARTED. A start has been made with the Carterton Tennis Club’s competitions and players will be kept busy for some weeks owing to the necessity of getting the earlier rounds completed as soon as possible. The results of the matches played during the past week are as follow: — Men's senior championship: J. Dwane defeated A. D. Taylor, 6/4, 6/4. Men’s handicap singles: E. H. Fisher (owe 15?) defeated R. Barrett (plus ?), 9/7. Ladies’ handicap singles: E. Newbould (owe 40) defeated I. Corlett (plus 4-6), 7/1. Ladies’ handicap doubles: Misses I. and V. Corlett (plus 15) defeated Misses E. Newbould and M. Lawrence (owe 15 3-6), 7/5.
WAR EMERGENCY COMMITTEE APPOINTED. At a meeting held in connection with the war emergency precautions, the Mayor, Mr D. L. Taverner, presided. Others present were Messrs A. E. Reid and E. T. Beaven (Wairarapa South County), L. H. Smart and J. Fisher (P. and A. Society), T. Ray (Band), A. Paterson (Boy Scouts), W. Hart (Borough Council), J. Finn and R. P. Wakelin (Fire Brigade), W. Martin and Miss Armstrong (School), Messrs C. C. Callender (Banks), H. Hughan (Garage Proprietors’ Association), G. Rabbits (R.S.A.), Mrs Standen (W.D.F.U.). Apologies for absence were received from Misses O. Wolters and C. Berrill, Messrs P. Bain and E. McKenzie. Mr A. E. Reid, on behalf of the County, offered the support of the council and the use of the staff in the event of necessity. Mr H. Hughan, on behalf of the garages, made the same offer. It was decided to set up a central committee with power to formulate an emergency scheme and to appoint subcommittees. The committee is as follows: —The Mayor. Messrs A. E. Reid, E. T. Beaven, W. DALEFIELD SCHOOL CHRISTMAS TREE FESTIVAL. The annual Christmas Tree gathering in connection with the Dalefield School will be. held in the Dalefield Hall tonight. The school children are looking forward to the event which will be the final one of the year, preparatory to the breaking up of school on Friday for the summer vacation. P. & A. Society. The monthly meeting of the general committee of the Wairarapa P. and A. Society will be held on Saturday next at 10 30 am.
