EAST SCHOOL
HAPPY CHRISTMAS PARTY. On Saturday evening the East School Association entertained the pupils at a very jolly plain and fancy dress Christmas party. Punctually at seven o’clock fairies and golfers, crossword puzzles and Scotsmen, Maori maidens and gipsy girls, and even a miniature Father Christmas, gathered in the schoolroom. This had been gaily decorated for the occasion with paper chains, Christmas friezes and appropriate pictures intempera, all of them the work of the pupils. The party opened with a Grand March which afforded the many parents present an opportunity to admire the dresses. The Grand March was followed by a programme of folk dances, all danced with great vigour and enjoyment. In contrast to the lively folk dances was a dance in waltz time which was invented and dances by four of the girls. Immediately after this came a spirited polonaise, at the conclusion of which, the children gathered round the charmingly decorated Christmas tree, where tiny fantastic lanterns gleamed among the branches. Santa Claus arrived to the strains of a stirring chorus, and distributed a gift to each child. Mr A. Gibbs, the president of the association, took the opportunity of thanking the members of the association for their co-operation throughout the year. Mr E. G. Coddington, the headmaster, and Mr J. Robertson, M.P., then briefly addressed the gathering. The serving of supper brought an enjoyable evening’s entertainment to its close.
