NAVY LEAGUE

<•—: LADIES’ AUXILIARY. MEETING IN MASTERTON. A well-attended meeting of the Ladies’ Auxiliary of the Navy League was held yesterday afternoon, Mrs A. Caselberg (president) presiding. Apologies for absence were received from Mesdames H. McKenzie Douglas, W. G. Lamb, W. A. Michael, S. Fletcher and Miss J. McLaren. It was reported that the flag presentation at Solway College and the Newman School had taken place on Saturday. Both gatherings had been very successful and those members who attended had found them most interesting. Proportions of subscriptions due to Wellington, amounting to £24 19s were passed for payment. With reference to special war work the following cablegram has been received by the Wellington Branch: — “The Navy League is initiating a scheme for the world-wide supply of comforts to the Navy. All branches are requested to assist. Gifts in money and kind are urgently needed. Details are following.”—(Signed) Freemantle, chairman of the London Navy League. The secretary was instructed to advise members of the committee that as soon as instructions arrived, a meeting would, be called if deemed necessary. The only definite request received so far was for sailors’ scarves in dark colours, 8 inches wide by 2 yards long. This request had been from the Naval Office in Wellington. The school membership for 1939 is 431, and includes the following schools: —Solway College, 108; St. Matthew’s School, 71; Wairarapa College, 36; Hadlow Proprietary School, 33; Kopuaranga School, 28; Te Ore Ore School, 26; Lansdowne School, 25; Fernridge School, 24; Newman School. 22; Central School, 18; Masterton West School, 14; St. Patrick’s School, 3; Mauriceville West School, 8; Matahiwi School. 4; St. Bride’s Convent. 1; miscellaneous, 5. There is an increase of 106 as compared with 1938.
