An official survey of defence preparations in South Africa reveals a continuous increase in recruiting. In Johannesburg alone, recruits are coming forward at the rate of from 750 to 1000 weekly, of whom a considerable number are aliens. The Department of Defence states that the enthusiasm of the people of the Union to assist the country’s military effort has been in some respects almost overwhelming.
