LITTLE GIRL KILLED
MOTOR TRUCK OVERTURNS. AFTER COLLISION WITH CAR. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) HASTINGS. December 10. A girl aged about two and a half years was killed instantly and three other children and two adults had a miraculous escape from serious injury when the light truck in which they were travelling overturned after colliding with a motor-car at the intersection of Frederick Street and Caroline Road. Hastings, at 2 p.m. yesterday. The victim was Shirley Oldfield, daughter of Mr and Mrs G. B. Olfleld. 815 Churchill Street. Hastings. Mr Oldfield was driving the truck, with his wife and infant child in the cab beside him. Sitting on the back were three other children. Mr and Mrs Oldfield and a son Cyril, aged about seven, were taken to Hastings Memorial Hospital for medical treatment, but were able to go home later in the afternoon. The driver of the other car was Mr Arthur Peter Smith, of Hastings. It is understood that the impact was slight and neither occupant of the car was hurt when the collision occurred. Mr Oldfield was travelling west aong Frederick Street and Mr Smith was going south along Caroline Road. The car was an early model of the heavier type. Th truck overturned, and it is believed that the little girl was thrown heavily against the windscreen. Mrs Oldfield was also thrown against the windscreen and received several nasty cuts on the arms and severe shock. The children on the back of the truck were thrown on the roadway, but escaped serious injury. Cyril Oldfield received abrasions and shock for which he was treated at Hastings Hospital.
