SOLWAY-MAN Al A MEETING. COMPETITION WINNERS. A meeting of the Solway-Manaia Women's Institute was held yesterday when Mrs Scrivener (vice-president), occupied the hair. Apologies for absense were received from Mesdames McMichael. Webber, Catherall. snr, and jnr. Sutherland, jnr, and Mrs Munn. A reading by Mrs Reynolds was enjoyed by all, as was Mrs Church’s description of a recent trip to Tauranga. Mrs Groombridge's ever popular pianoforte solos received well-merited applause. The competitoins resulted as follow: —Sweet peas, Mrs Reynolds 1, Mrs Scrivener 2; Christmas lily, Mrs Scrivener 1, Mrs Russell 2; Christmas cake, Mrs Nicholls 1, Mrs Groomsbridge 2; Christmas gifts, Mrs Catton 1; Mrs Groomsbridge 2, Mrs Scrivener and. Mrs Whittaker (equal), 3. The hostesses for February will be Mesdames Crewe. Church, Cotton and Doggett. The following will be the competitions, sewing, daintiest handkerchief sachet, cooking, 1, fruit squares; 2, one egg chocolate cake, the following recipe to be used: —1 egg, J-cup butter, I-cup sugar, 1 tablespoon syrup, IJ-cups flour. 2 teaspoonsful cocoa. 1 teaspoonful soda, pinch of salt. (Institute Cookery Book, page 117). Flowers (1), best aster (2). buttonhole and lady's shoulder spray.
