CARTERTON

CHILDREN’S DANCE SUCCESSFUL GATHERING. ("Times-Age" Special.) The King’s Theatre, Carterton, last night was crowded when the annual children's plain and fancy dress dance was held,, being a success from all viewpoints. The stage and dress circle were occupied by adults. The folk dances of the little children were carried out in an excellent manner, showing careful tuition on the part of the teachers, among whom was Mrs F. Crane, wife of the first assistant. There were four hundred school children present and many beautiful dresses were' worn by the senior girls while the fancy costumes made a splendid display. The children, who thoroughly enjoyed themselves, occupied the dance floor from at 7 o'clock until after 10 o'clock. The music for the children’s part of the programme was supplied by Miss Irwin on the piano, while Mrs Bredin and Miss Armstrong also assisted. At intervals Music was supplied by a gramophone in charge of Mrs Upton. ' Mr Peter Fisher played the bagpipes for an Irish Jig danced by the children. A large ladies’ committee headed by Mrs G. Steffert Junr, was in charge of the supper room. Prior to the conclusion of the children's part of the programme, the headmaster, Mr W. Martin, thanked those present for their assistance in making the annual dance such a success. He specially thanked Mrs Geo Steffert Junr who was in charge of the ladies' committee, the members of the school committee, those who had acted as ushers, the donors of gifts of money, etc, towards the supper, the teachers. ■ and the parents for their attendance and for having made the fancy costumes worn by the children. The gross takings were over £3O. Dancing was later indulged in by the adults, the music for which was provided by Tom Udy's dance band.

BOWLING CARTERTON v MANAWATU. The following will represent Carterton against the visiting Manawatu bowlers, six rinks of whom will play on the Carterton green on Saturday morning. Rinks will also be present from Greytown. Featherston and Martinborough. The Carterton rinks will be as under, the fourth one having been chosen in case it’ is required: — Kilmister, Geo Steven, Robertson, J. C. Harp (s); J. Beaven. Underhill, J. G. Stevens, C. CENTENNIAL MEMORIAL SWIMMING BATHS. A meeting held in the A. and P. Rooms last night for the purpose of discussing the proposed Centennial swimming baths for Carterton was well attended. It was decided to apply to the Minister of Internal Affairs for permission to hold an art union. A strong committee was formeti including the Mayor and councillors and representatives of the Wairarapa South County Council and settlers of the district. The Carterton Swimming Club promised a donation of £l5 towards the proposal and a number of offers of assistance were received from other organisations. It was resolved to open subscription lists in the Press and to canvas for subscriptions throughout the borough and county. Mr P. A. Cole is secretary. Tennis. The Carrington Park team to play Wairarapa College, at College, will be picked from the following players, who will leave Carrington Park at 1.15 p.m. Any unable to play are requested to notify the club captain, Mr J. Spackman, N. Williams. Pupils Visit Farm. Several boys of the Carterton District High School paid a visit to Mr Knutson's farm at Dalefield this week. Mr M. Knutson demonstrated the chief points of a good dairy cow. using several animals of the herd to illustrate his remarks. He was listened to by the pupils with close attention. Inspection was also made of a stack of ensilage and the method of making, and its uses were described by Mr Knutson. A hearty vote of thanks, carried by acclamation, was passed to Mr Knutson. Personal. Mr Paul Dudson. son of Mr J. A. Dudson, of Carterton. who is Registrar of the Native Lands Court, at Wanganui. has received notice of his transfer to Wellington, which will take place after the New Year. The death occurred at Island Bay, Wellington, yesterday, of Mrs Godber. widow of the late Mr George E. Godber.
