CALVES & LAMBS
BOYS AND GIRLS’ CLUBS MASTERTON GROUP. RESULTS OF JUDGING. The judging in connection with the competitions held by the Masterton Group of the Boys' and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs was held at Solway Showgrounds on Tuesday. The judging was in the capable hands of Mr D. C. Stuart, Rangitumau (calves) and Mr T. V. Caverhill. Masterton (lambs). The following were the prize-win-ners:— Calves.—Dairy type: Bernard Charles Patrick (Te Whiti), 1; Shirley Mary Bradley (Te Whiti), 2; Jack Bradley (Te Whiti), 3. Care and handling: Robert Miller, 1: Lenna Rogers, 2; Bruce Clark, 3. Judging competition: Stuart McLauchlan, 1; Jack Bradley, 2; Charles Wilkin, 3. Lambs:—Best fat lamb: Ivy Smith (Opaki), 1; Mavis Cottle (Kopuaranga), 2; Gwen Cottle (Kopuaranga), 3. Best white-faced lamb (Mr Caverhill’s special prize): Peggy Laing (Mangapakeha), 1. Record prizes: Alison Cameron (Mauriceville), 1; Alyson Atack (Mangapakeha), 2; Kathleen Brophy (Kopuaranga), 3. Mr Stuart demonstrated on a calf and indicated how points were awarded in judging under the various headings. The competitors then judged a different calf and awarded their own marks. Most of the competitors proved that some day they will make excellent judges. At the conclusion of the judging, Mr Brockett congratulated the prize-win-ners, and all the competitors on the very fine display of animals. He thanked the judges for the efficient manner in which they had carried out their duties, the parents for their attendance and all those who had helped to make the gathering.such a success. Mr Feast also thanked the competitors and parents for the interest they had taken in the work. Mi- Stuart congratulated the competitors on the very fine lot of calves exhibited, adding that his task of selecting the winners had been a difficult one. He urged those who had not won a prize not to be discouraged as there was very little difference between the exhibits and if they kept up their interest they might easily win next time. Mr Hesse stressed the fact that the animals shown were becoming a better type each year. He appealed for support for the clubs as they were rendering excellent service. He concluded by congratulating the local committee and the children on the very fine display and the success which had attended the demonstration.
