PHYSICAL WELFARE

DEVELOPMENT IN MASTERTON. COACHING IN TENNIS. An interesting development of the Physical Welfare Movement has taken place in Masterton during the week. Working in conjunction with the area officer, Mr S. McNicol, the Wairarapa Lawn Tennis Association has made available the coaching services of Mr Roy Howe, the well-known Wellington player. The chief purpose of Mr Howe’s visit has been to extend help to clubs in coaching both senior and junior members and to create interest in tennis by demonstrations to school children. He has been particularly busy in the schools and has explained the mechanics of ground shots to over 200 children during his short stay. Children from all the primary schools and the Wairarapa College have been present on the Memorial Park courts for the purpose of receiving instruction in strokes, etc. Mr Howe was at the courts last evening giving advice Io club players. It is hoped by this scheme to advance the interests of tennis, and the local association is to be congratulated on their enterprise in so readily supporting the movement. Mr Howe is also fortunate in that for the purposes of exhibition matches he has an opponent of the calibre of Mr Phil Hawksworth. A match has already been played between them and the Carterton and Martinborough clubs have invited Mr Hawksworth to play an exhibition match with Mr Howe.
