BOWLING CONTESTS LAST NIGHT'S RESULTS. ("Times-Age” Special.) Games were played by members o the Carterton Bowling Club last even ing with the following results: — Singles: W. Hart beat Lynch 18/13 Hughan beat Robertson 23/10; Marti) beat Hawker 26/9. Champion pairs: Simmonds am Riggs (s) beat Bain and Tucker (s' 16/15. Progressive pairs: G. Steven anc Larsen (s) beat McCarty and Callen der (s) 31/27; Kilmister and Harp (s'. beat Aplin and Barber (s) 22/16. The following is the draw for the second round of the championshij pairs: Kilmister and Beale (s) v Callender and Martin (s); Simmonds anc Riggs (s) v Newbould and Hughar (s); Boyne and Barber (s) v Harrington and R. Thompson (s); Hawker ano De Lacey s) v Beaven and Barr (s); Harris and Hart (s) v Lynch and G. Stevens (s); Larsen and Robertson (s) v Bain and Tucker (s); Smith and Sorensen (s) v Underhill and Harp (s). Games must be finished by December 16. SCHOOL COMMITTEE MONTHLY MEETING. At the monthly meeting of the Carterton school committee there were present Messrs H. J. McKenzie, W. Knowles (secretary), J. Finn (treasurer), C. K. Goodin, B. E. Clark, J. Stevens, W. King, G. Rabbits, and the headmaster, Mr W. Martin. The Education Board advised that plans and specifications for additional accommodation at the school had been prepared and the levels will be taken at the first opportunity. The Carterton branch of the Red Cross Society was granted the use of the school rooms for an examination in connection with the -home nursing class towards the end of December. The Education Board advised that a grant of £22 13s Id for incidental expenses had been placed to the credit of the committee's account. The Board also advised that the supervisor would be in Carterton at an early date, when he would look into the question of the condition of the asphalt at the'brick school with a view to having it repaired. The'treasurer reported a credit balance of £4B 7s lid, and accounts amounting to £42 13s 7d were passed for payment. The headmaster reported a roll of 289, a slight decrease on last month I mainly owing to the fact that a large family had left the district. The attendance had been good, with an entire
absence of sickness in epidemic form. Mr Martin suggested that the break-ing-up ceremony for the secondary and primary schools be separated, and this was agreed to. The matter-of selecting speakers and making other arrangements was left to the chairman and headmaster. Considerable discussion took place on the proposed visit of the school children to the Exhibition, but it was finally decided to leave the matter over till after the holidays. It was decided to forward a letter of thanks to the Minister of Education for the supply of milk to the school. No meeting will be held in January. The chairman extended the compliments of the season to all members and the staff. “This may be the last occasion on which we may be able to exchange these greetings, as before next Christmas there will be an election, and some of us may fall by the wayside.” Mr Martin reciprocated on behalf of the staff. CARTERTON BATHS CARETAKER APPOINTED. Mr H. H. L. Meyrick has been appointed baths attendant at the Carterton Swimming Baths. There were four applicants for the position, including a lady. Personal. Mr Lambert Smith, of Grafton. Auckland, and formerly of Carterton' is a visitor to Carterton and is the guest of Mr and Mrs J. McKnight, Tyne Street. Hay Making. , Hay making is in full swing through- j out the district and hay presses and 5 mowing machines are being kept busy. .
