GENERAL FREYBERG
VISITING NEW ZEALAND SHORTLY SPENDING SEVERAL WEEKS HERE. ANNOUNCEMENT BY DEFENCE MINISTER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. It is announced by the Minister of Defence (Mr Jones) that, at the invitation of the Government, backed by the recommendation of the Chief of the Imperial General Staff’, MajorGeneral Freyberg. who is to command the New Zealand military forces overseas, will shortly pay a visit to the Dominion. “At the time of his appointment to the New Zealand command,” said Mr Jones, “Major-General Freyberg was General Officer Commanding the Salisbury Plain area. He has already, since the outbreak of war, spent some time in France. Now he is coming to discuss questions of organisation with Major-General Duigan, Chief of the General Staff here and the Government, to meet the officers and men whom he will lead and generally to familiarise himself with the military situation in New Zealand. It is expected that Major-General Freyberg will be for several weeks in New Zealand. He left London yesterday.
