Military Parade.

The fortnightly parade of C Squadron. Wellington East Coast Mounted Rifles, was held in the Drill Hall last night. The parade was inspected by Colonel i-I. B. Maunsetl. 0.8. E., E.D.. who complimented the men on the smart turn-out, and expressed pleasure at the good work carried out during the training period. The committee to select pilots for the Royal N.Z. Air Force sat earlier, and examined a large number of recruits. A Long Wait, Patience must be a virtue common to all members of the Marylebone Cricket Club, as is illustrated by a'story told by Mr C. V. Dayus to the Otago Travel Club. During his visit to Lord's Cricket Ground he had noticed that of the 20 who were elected to membership in 1938 18 had been nominated for membership in 1912. The other two had been waiting since 1911. The speaker suggested that, with the growing waiting list, if a member today nominated his son at birth the accession to full membership could probably be realised when the son attained the mature age of three-score years and ten. America Supports Allies. The opinion that there are millions of American who are ardent supporters of the Allied cause in spite of the country’s neutrality is expressed in a letter received by a Dunedin resident from Dr Herbert L. Clark, a doctor and professor of the Museum of Comparative Zoology at Havard College, Cambridge, Massachusetts. “The outbreak of the war.' the letter states, “has been a terrible conclusion to the summer and much as 1 regret such stupendous folly as lighting I really do not see how il was to be avoided in this particular case. Our newspapers and politicians preach neutrality to us day and night, but I know there are millions like myself who have not a fibre of neutrality in their makeup, but are ardently supporting Great Britain in every possible way. 1 regret to say that at the present time very little has been done or can be done, but if the war continues, as it probably will. I am sure that we shall be more and more useful and less and less neutral.'' Income Tax Evasion. Understatement of income, involving £3243 over five years, was the basis of five charges against Herbert Askew, hotelkeeper, To Araroa. heard by Mi- Coleman, S.M.. in the Magistrate's Court at Gisborne yesterday, a Press Association message reports. Defendant was lined £lO2 and costs £4 IDs. Mr F. W. Nolan, for the Commissioner oi Taxes, said, an examination of the books revealed systematic suppression of receipts, money being put uwtiv in defendant's and his wiles names, without being recorded. As a result of iiiidersiateinent of income during the last live years, tax totalling VI 12 had been underpaid. which defendant had since paid. Counsel for defendant attributed the position io .legii.geiice rather than will'u! suppression. Defendant entered his takings daily and handed the books to an accountant in Rualoria to handle
