ATTACK ON GERMAN WARSHIPS DIRECT HITS WITH HEAVY BOMBS. DESTRUCTION OF ENEMY SUBMARINE. (British Official Wireless.) (Received This Day. 10.45 a.m.) RUGBY, December 3. The Air Ministry announces that a strong formation of R.A.F. bombers today carried out an attack on German warships in the vicinity of Heligoland. Direct hits were obtained with heavy bombs. Considerable anti-aircraft fire was met and a Messerschmidt fighter—the only enemy fighter encountered was shot down. All the British aircraft returned. The Air Ministry also has just announced that several coastal reconnaissance aircraft of the R.A.F.. while on patrol over the North Sea this morning, attacked and destroyed with bombs an enemy submarine on the surface. A direct hit was obtained on the base of the conning tower.
