Rotary Conference. The 1940 conference of the New Zeas' land District Rotary International will be held in Palmerston North from March 6 to March 8. Weekend Bivouac. The local Territorial unit will hold a weekend Bivouac al the Solwa) Showgrounds on Saturday, Deccmbei 9. Exhibition Attendances. On Saturday there was an attendance of 21.024 at the Centennial Exhibition, bringing the total to date up to 349,871. with a daily average of 15,903. Spread of Hemlock. Recently declared a noxious weed by the Hawke’s Bay County Council, hemlock is noticeable in various parts of the Heretaunga Plains, and specially in the Meeanee district, where it has spend over a .considerable area of country. National Party Caucus. A caucus of Parliamentary members of the National Party will be held in Wellington tomorrow and on Wednesday.' This is in accordance with the party’s' arrangements for periodical meetings during the recess to enable National members to exchange views and to keep in touch with developments of interest to the party. Road Accident. A minor accident occurred at about the half-way point on the MastertonCarterton main highway at about 10 o'clock on Saturday night. It is understood that a car ran into a stationary car which had broken down. Pouring rain made visibility very bad at the time. No one was injured, and the accident was not reported to the I police at Masterton or Carterton. Westport Band Anniversary. ~ The Westport. Municipal Band celebrated its seventieth anniversary with a dinner on Saturday night and a gathering of bands in Victoria Square yesterday. The bands present were the Inangahua Silver, Granity Silver and Westport Municipal, each band playing selections. The three bands were massed and gave contributions under the respective conductors, Messrs F. Smith (Westport), A. E. Ellison (Inangahua). and A. Coe (Granity). An official welcome was given by the mayor, Mr ,!. IVI. Robertson. Yacht Capsizes. After an hour and a half’s struggle to keep afloat, four persons, who were thrown into the water when the Idle Along yacht Aloha capsized in a squall on Wellington harbour yesterday, were rescued by the Eastbourne Borough Council's ferry steamer - Muritai One of the crew. Mr G. Robertson, labourer. 12 Milton Street, was suffering from shock, and another. Mr W. Lamont, clerk, of the same address, was suffering slightly from shock. The other members of the crew. Mr and Mrs Ballinger, were not hurt. East School Dance. Despite the boisterous weather, a large crowd attended the Masterton East School dance on Saturday night and spent a thoroughly enjoyable time. With Mr J. West at the piano, and Mr S. N. Ihaka as M.C.. the proceedings went with a swing. Extras were played by Mr Te Huki. The Monte Carlo competition was won by’ Miss R. Brogdon and Mr R. Dovery. Supper was provided by the ladies' committee. As the popularity of these dances is being maintained, the committee has decided to continue holding them. The next dance will take place on December 16. A Fast Marathon. G. L. Austin retained the Otago marathon championship on Saturday when he won a memorable race in 2hr 28min 33sec. the fastest time ever recorded in New Zealand for the full distance of 26 miles 386 yards. R. Wilson. the youthful Mornington runner, caused a surprise in keeping with Auston for most of the journey, and in finishing in second place in 2hr 44min 17sec. R. Colston (Caversham) was third in 2hr 47min 20sec. The New Zealand champion, C. G. Gibbons, withdrew in a hopeless position after covering 20 miles. He had little preparation, and was troubled by a knee. Four out of the six starters completed the long journey. Military Camp Population. No locality in New Zeealand has had its population increased,so rapidly as Trentham. From a few hundreds at the outbreak of war the population of the military camp has grown to 2500. With 500 acres of territory in the Army Department area. 300 buildings. : its own water supply and sanitation system, road and building maintenance organisations, a hospital, swim-, ming baths and cinema. Trentham has all the amenities of a town. And it 1
