STATE THEATRE
“OLD BONES OF THE RIVER.” The large audience at the State Theatre last night thoroughly enjoyed tire excellent bill of fare presented to > them. It was a double feature programme which made an immediate appeal containing plenty of variety, and holding the interest throughout. “Old Bones of the River,” a film based on stories by Edgar Wallace depicting life among West African natives and the efforts of an enthusiastic professor to teach them to raise their standard of living was much appreciated. The star is Will Hay (the professor) and he is responsible for one of the best performances of his career. His arrival in Africa coincides with the departure of his nephew, Commissioner Sanders, for England, who has left his second in command, Captain Hamilton (Jack Livesey) in charge. Disembarking from the same boat as the professor is M'Bapi, crafty brother of the faithful tribal chief, Bosambo, who is returning to his native land with a gin-distiller which he gets past the customs by planting it among the luggage of the unsuspecting professor. M’Bapi intends to drive the natives to drink and incite them to rebellion against the English, in order that he may get control of the rich mining districts in which the country abounds. It is a picture that will make an immediate appeal to picture patrons as it has many outstanding qualities to recommend it. It is a spectacular fun feast. The other dramatic feature, “Mr Motto Takes a Vacation,” is a mystery picture with plenty of thrills, a clever plot and acting o£ a very high standard. The chief role is splendidly handled by Peter Lorre and there is a strong supporting cast. There is an excellent supporting programme including the latest Fox Australian and International News which was greatly appreciated by the audience.
