TURF NEWS AND NOTES
CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Du Maurier Wins at Feilding Meeting After Close Finish DESPERATE RACE IN SPRINT WON BY BRUNHILD (BY "CARBINE.”) At the Feilding meeting yesterday keen racing was witnessed. The chief event, the Manchester Handicap, saw a keen struggle for supremacy between Du Maurier and Kaiwaka. The Surveyor gelding led practically all the way and at the home turn Kaiwaka put in a challenge. The latter beaded Du Maurier with a furlong to go but form stood to Du Maurier who came away again to win by a narrow margin. The Flying Handicap was another splendid race and produced a desperate finish between Brunhild and Race Call. In the straight the Unknown’gelding put in a great challenge but Brunhild was sent to it again and responded well to win by less than a head. W. J. Broughton rode three winners during the day—Kilometre, Malik Kafur and Tuatara, all first favourites.
FEILDING RACES
CHIEF EVENT TO DU MAURIER. FLYING WON BY BRUNHILD. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N.. November 30. Keen racing marked the opening of the spring meeting of the Feilding Joockey Club today, there being several close finishes. The two principal races, the Manchester Handicap and the Flying Handicap, were in doubt till the last strides. The former was won by Du Maurier, and the spring by Brunhild. The other open event was won by Notium. The weather was very muggy, with light rain for the latter part of the programme, but the track was always in good order and fast. There was a good attendance, but a slight decrease in totalisator returns. The amount handled was £14,284 10s, compared with £16,951 on the off day last year, which was a Monday, the decrease being £2666 10s.' A feature was the riding of W. J. Broughton, who rode three winners. There were two inquiries by the judicial committee, but in neither case was action found necessary. The interference met with by Peata in the Juvenile was caused by horses running green, and interference to Lindrum in the Kowhai Hack by Thrasos was found due to the latter attempting to savage his opponent.
