GREYTOWN BOROUGH
MEETING OF COUNCIL POSITION IN REGARD TO BAND INSTRUMENTS. (“Times-Age” Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Greytown Borough Council there were present the Mayor (Mr A. W. Horton). Councillors Blissett. Eagar, Farley. Nightingale, Stuart, Tate and Wood. Apologies for absence were received from Councillors Balfour and Trotman. The- reports submitted by the Gas and Works Foreman were adopted. The Buildings and Sanitary Inspector reported that he had reinspected the certain premises’ in Main Street, which were closed till such time as the necessary repairs were carried out to his satisfaction. He stated he could not take any further action either under the Health Act or Municipal Corporation Act. The Mayor explained that the position was that under the Health Act. the inspector had powers over buildings which were a menace to Public Health. As the building had been closed for some months it could not be contended that the building was a menace. He further stated that the Municipal Corporation Act permitted him to take action for any building deserted and dangerous to the public but apparently the Health Inspector did not consider this building was dangerous. .
Mr F. C. Bunny wrote stating that he was the only ratepayer who paid a water race rent and asked for exemption from the charge. The Mayor explained that Mr Bunny’s contention that he was the only “Borough ratepayer” paying this charge was somewhat misleading. Mr Bunny was a large ratepayer but the property he was charged the water race rent on was one he had purchased from the Bicknell Estate and although it adjoined his own property it was in the County. —No action was taken in* the matter.
Major Andrew wrote asking if the band instruments could be made available and if so on what conditions. The Wellington Artillery Band also wrote asking if the Council would consider selling the instruments and if so the price of the same. The Mayor stated that as far as he could ascertain the instruments were left with the Council for safe keeping by the trustees of the Greytown Band which was now defunct. He had interviewed the trustees, Messrs H. T. Rees and C. W. Maxton, who stated that they were agreeable to sell the instruments but not to loan them. The trustees suggested that Mr Denny be asked to value them.
Councillors Farley and Tate expressed doubts as to the Council having any power in the matter. It was eventually decided to ask Mr Dennis to value the instruments, and also to request the trustees to meet the Council at the next Meanwhile further information is to be obtained in regard to the matter. The Trust Lands Trust wrote stating that the improvements on the saleyards sections had been removed and asked that the rates be adjusted accordingly. The matter was left to the Town Clerk to adjust.
The Minister of Railways replied in regard to the train services to the Exhibition. on the representation made by Mr W. H. Day. that this matter would be investigated. The Mayor stated that an official from the .Railway Department had interviewed him relative to the matter and stated that to run trains as suggested would involve considerable expense, but he would go further into the matter.
The Wairarapa Hospital Board wrote pointing out the position in regard to fire fighting facilities at the Greytown Hospital. The water available to the Hospital was from a 3in main as far as the main gates where a fire plug is situated; from that point a 2in pipe supplied the hospital needs. The Board suggested that the 3in main be extended along East Street and two additional plugs be installed, one in front of the Nurses' Home and the other near the Buchanan Ward. It was left to the Works Committee to report on the matter.
Mr J. W. Card, chairman of the Local Zone Patriotic Committee, wrote appointing Mr J. Kiernan. Town Clerk, as receiver of all moneys raised for patriotic purposes. He also notified that a Flag Day was to be held on Friday. December 8. to raise funds for Christmas comforts for the men of the Forces. A ladies’ committee is to bo formed to assist the project.
