MANAWATU GORGE
HIGHWAY STILL BLOCKED. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PALMERSTON N.. November 28. Late yesterday afternoon the slip which fell in the Manawatu Gorge about a mile from the Woodville end on Friday night widened and again blocked the highway with debris piled as high as the fence on the outside edge. This afternoon debris was still falling on to the road, which was unlikely to be open for some time. Fifteen men are employed clearing the slip, but there is still a good deal of loose material on the hill-face which must be cleared before men can be placed at the foot of it clearing the roadway. In view of the dangerous nature of the formation of the hillside, and’also in view of the piled-up state of the road, no traffic was allowed over the slip tonight. It was stated that till the whole face had been swept clear of loose material in the vicinity of the scar left by the slip loose rocks were likely to come down at any time.
