WAR ON NEUTRALS
LOSS OF THE SPAARNDAM DUTCH PUBLIC SHOCKED. NEW LIGHT ON GERMAN METHODS. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright. LONDON. November 27. The sinking of the Holland-Amerika liner Spaarndam (8857 tons), which struck a mine in the Thames Estuary occurred at 10 a.m. The liner. remained partially submerged till shortly before midnight, when fire broke out. Within a few minutes the whole craft was blazing furiously. The Dutch public is shocked at the sinking, which is the seventh since the outbreak of the war, bringing the Dutch total tonnage lost to 31,341. The woman lost was the sole passenger. She was an American, aged 74 years. She was swept into the sea when one of the boats was swamped. One of the methods adopted by Germany in endeavouring to escape the odium of sinking neutral ships was revealed in the case of the Dutch vessel Sliedrecht, which was sunk by a German submarine on November 16 in the middle of the Atlantic. Referring to this incident the Germans later announced that they had sunk a British Q-ship disguised as a Dutch merchantman.
