The total number of Victoria Crosses awarded for deeds of valour during the Great War was 581, including two V.C. bars awarded to soldiers who had previously won the V.C. This total is greater than the number of awards from the inception of the decoration in 1856, up to the opening of the Great War in 1914. With one exception, all of the awards in the Great War were for services in the field. The exception was the V.C. given to Lieutenant Leete Robinson, of the Royal Flying Corps, for having destroyed a German airship which participated in a raid on London on the night of September 2, 1916.
