TURNING THE HEEL
A RELIABLE METHOD. In answer to many inquiries, here is a reliable method for turning the heels of socks. When the leg is long enough—say 12 inches—place half the stitches on 2 idle needles or holders (such as large safety pins), putting the other half on one needle, with the heelseam in the middle. Knit and purl alternate rows to form a square. For a round of 72 stitches, this will be a heel-flap of 36 stitches work for 18 rows. To turn, slip 1, knit 24. knit 2 together, turn. Slip 1. knit 16. knit 2 together. Continue till only 18 stitches remain, then on same needle, pick up 18 down side of flap. Knit (or rib) instep stitches on to a second needle, and with a third needle pick up 18 on other side of flap, taking also 9 stitches from Ist needle. You now have 27 stitches on each sideneedle, 35 on instep needle. Work one round. For gussets. Ist needle, knit 24. knit 2 together, knit 1. Work instep. On 3rd needle, knit 1. knit 2 together, knit 24. Reduce at these points every 2nd round till side needles have only 18 stitches left. A heel-flap should be half the total of stitches, and the turn and the pickup along sides of flap each equal to quarter of the total.
