SWISH OUTFIT

SMART LACE AND TAFFETA. . Here's an outfit that solves the vexed problem of which hat to wear with which frock, because hat and frock are both made of the same material — stiff white lace. The whole outfit is easy to make, ■ needn't cost much. The frock is easy ’ to make, simple neckline, straightforward sleeves, and a four-seamed skirt that's easy to cut and put together. Because it's smart this summer to wear light over dark,, a transparent •material over a heavy one, Angela has chosen stiff white lace over navy taffeta. White looks cool, lace looks elegant, won't crush, is easy to pack, and the taffeta beneath it that swishes as you walk makes you sound as grand as you look. For The Hat You Will Need One bundle of white hat wire, one yard of lace, 1A yards of narrow ribbon. Cut a piece of wire 52 inches long. Join ends and use the join as centre back of hat. Cut another piece of wire for head size, join, using join as centre back. Cut another piece of wire about five inches and connect this to join on outer wire and also head wire at joins made already in these two wires. Now make two points in front of outer wire for squaring the front edge of frame. That is. bend wire to make points for front edge of hat. Now take two pieces of wire seven inches long, using one for each point of front and secure, then fasten the other end on head wire and secure. Thon bend this front back as much as is becoming to the wearer. Now take bias strips of chiffon about three-quarters of an inch wide and bind all wires, making certain that binding is twisted evenly and tight. Lay frame on lace and cut about an inch larger than outer edge. After same is cut, secure to wire edge with pins. Then proceed to sew placing stitches which are backhand and made by passing the needle through straight and bringing it back the same way. These stitches must be placed as close as possible to bound wire. When all lace is securely sewn, trim off all the surplus lace close to your stitches already made. Next cut hole in centre of lace, which has been first securely pinned to head wire then slash lace several times from centre towards head wire and proceed to stitch as done on the outer wire. When that is done, trim off all surplus lace, leaving a neat finish. CROWN.—Cut a circle of lace 12 inches in diameter. Mark it off in quarters with a thread, then run a thread between each marker. This helps to make shirrings even, and then pro-* eeed to sew to head wire. TRIMMING.—Tack the narrow rib-1 bon round the join, tie nt the back and ■ let the ends hang; down.
