An Effective Win.

In the St Andrew's Handicap at Auckland yesterday Birthday Boy revelled in the soft going and scored an effective win. Royevrus and Balinavar were the favourites. Birthday Boy was always nicely placed on the rails, just behind the leaders, and he came through at the distance to win going away. Balinavar made play for most of the way, and it was not till after passing the distance that he surrendered the lead to Birthday Boy, who finished in most attractive fashion. Flood Tide, sixth at the turn, came home in fine style on the outside for a good third, and he appeared improved after his race on the first day. Te Hai ran a good race for fourth. Royevrus and Inver were right in the picture entering the straight, but they tired in the run home. Royal Appellant became badlj’ placed early, and was never dangerous. Beau Repaire made a fair showing.
