CARTERTON

AGRICULTURAL CLUBS CLAREVILLE COMPETITIONS. (“Times-Age" Special.) The annual competition held in conjunction with the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Clubs was held at the Clareville School yesterday, in wet weather. There was a fair attendance of parents and visitors and the judging was carried out by Mr Alan Fisher, of the Young Farmers’ Club. Five calves and four lambs were exhibited, all coming forward in good condition. . The awards were as under: — Calves: —Type: J. Daysh, 1; N. Humphries, 2; B. Reid, 3. Handling: Nola Humphries, 1; B. Reid. 2; J. Daysh, 3. Lambs: —Type: Ray Humphries. 1; June Rayner, 2; R. Abbott, 3. Handling: June Rayner, 1; R. Humphries, 2; E. Rayner, 3. The judge, Mr Fisher, afterwards demonstrated on the points on which his awards had been made. The first prize calf was an outstanding one, although the others were really good. The lambs were only a medium lot. Mr Keith Reid, secretary of the School Committee, thanked Mr Fisher for acting as judge and for his able demonstration. Each exhibitor received one shilling apart from the usual prize money. BOWLING COMPETITIONS POSTPONED. The third round of the Booth Cup and Shield competitions held under the jurisdiction of the Wairarapa Bowling Centre has been postponed from December 9 to December 16 on account of a visit 'from the Manawatu Centre on December 9. PRIZE-GIVING PARKVALE SUNDAY SCHOOL. The annual prize-giving of the Parks. vale Sunday School took place at the S Parkvale Hall last night when many children, parents and friends assembled from all parts of the district. The Rev. W. F. Stent, Vicar of St. Mark’s Church, Carterton, officiated throughout the evening. The Christmas hymn, “Hark the Herald Angels Sing,” was sung, followed by a prayer. The Vicar then read Chap. 6 Matthew, verses 24 —34, "No man can serve two masters.” and in a short address urged people to realise that Christianity was the one hope of the world. Democracy was not enough. It must be allied to faith in God. He stressed the importance of the teaching and training of children to Christian ideals for they will be the citizens of tomorrow. Reference was made to the great work of Mr A. E. Robinson, who was superintendent for 20 years. In June Mr A. E. Robinson left Parkvale to reside in Nelson. Since then Miss E. Brasell has been appointed to the position.

Mr Stent expressed his great pleasure at being present at the prize-giv-ing which he had attended regularly for the past eleven years. The hymn “Rock of Ages,” was then sung after which the report and balance sheet were read. Mr Stent then presented the prizes. The children gave a most enjoyable concert consisting of -songs, recitations and dances. Supper was served and once again the happy prize-giving night was over. The concert programme was as follows; —Hymn by all Sunday School children; recitation, Miss Joyce Howard; trio, Beryl James, Pat Jensen and Gwen Adlam; recitation, Delma Jensen and Margaret Peacock; song, Joyce and George Howard: “Christmas Candles,” Sunday School girls; song, Miss S. Rayner. Personal Items. Mrs J. A. Wallace, of Conolly’s Line, Carterton. who has been undergoing treatment in the Croydon Hospital for the past three weeks, returned to her home on Thursday. The small daughter of Mr Isaac H. Knutson, of Victoria Street, Carterton, had the misfortune to break her arm on Monday as the result of a fall from a bicycle. Mr and Mrs C. G. Butler, of Marton, are spending a holiday in Carterton with Mr Butler's parents. Visitors to the Brown-Every wedding which is to take place at St. Andrew’s Presbyterian Church, Carterton, today include Miss Gwennyth Every, Mokau (bridesmaid); Miss J. Riddell, Gisborne (bridesmaid); Misses H. P. and R. Every, Nelson (aunts of the bride); Mr and Mrs J. D. Martin (Wellington), Misses M. and G. Martin (Wellington), Miss Spite t Wellington), Mr R. Kinneburgh (Wellington), Miss K. Sutton (Taranaki), Mr and Mrs A. Congalton (Wellington). Mr and Mrs J. Vennell, of Te Kauwhata, are spending a holiday in Carterton and are staying with Mr Vennell’s mother and father. They will visit the Exhibition at Wellington and later return to Te Kstuwhata. ' -
