Phelan, Oriental Bay, Wellington. Miss H. Beech, of Mangahao, who had been on a visit to Masterton, has returned home. Mr and Mrs J. C. Cooper, Bideford, stayed recently at the. Empire Hotel, Master ton. Miss Avis Whiteman, of Eketahuna, is the guest of her sister, Mrs J. Hansen, of Makerua Plains. The death occurred yesterday a: Huahgarua, Martinborough, of Mrs C. G. S. Martin, wife of Mr, W. J. Martin,' at the age of 82 years. Miss Pat Devonshire, a popular member of the Konini Basketball Club, will leave Pahiatua next week to take up a position in Wellington. ' In the Trinity College examination recently held in Wellington, Beulah Hirst, of Masterton, was successful in passing the Advanced Senior Elocution examination.

By the death (which was reported in yesterday's “Times-Age") of Mrs Sarah Josephine Rutherfurd, widow of Mr John Rutherfurd. Wairere, Masterton, another link between the present generation and the early pioneers of the Wairarapa district has been severed. Mrs Rutherfurd. who, during the past 26 years, had been living in Taranaki and Wanganui, was a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs George Wakelin, who arrived in New Zealand in the late forties. In 1851 the family went to the Wairarapa, their belongings being transported over the Rimutakas by bullock dray. In 1878, at the age of 20, Mrs Rutherfurd married Mr John Rutherfurd, of the Indian Navy, who had in 1867 begun sheep farming on a property in the dense bush country' 25 miles north of Masterton, which remained the home of Mr and Mrs Rutherfurd and their family for 35 years. Mrs Rutherfurd, who was predeceased by her husband in 1916, had a family of five sons and five daughters, of whom three sons and three daughters survive her. Two of her sons lost their lives in the Great War.
