CARS AND WIRELESS

SHORT WAVE INTERFERENCE. The subject of interference caused to many owners of short wave radio sets by the ignition systems of motor vehicles has been engaging the attention of interested parties in Great Britain with a view to clarifying the situation. The British Electrical and Allied Industrial Research Association had had the matter under investigation, and is of the opinion that it is possible to remove or greatly minimise interference from this source.

The technical report of the association discloses that the magnitude of the electrical disturbance radiated' from the ignition system of motor vehicles is dependent to a very large extent on the disposition of various components. For example, a compact power plant assembly, with short hightension leads, and with the coil mounted on the engine block, brings a marked reduction in the disturbance level.

This finding provides an explanation which many operators of short wave radio sets have sought, as it probably accounts for the reason why some motor vehicles cause more disturbance to “short wave" reception than do other automobiles. This method of dealing with the trouble, it is pointed out, would not affect motor manufacturing costs, performance of engine, or accessibility hr any way. Tests carried out by the association with 32 vehicles proved that electrical radiation from a compact assembly (the coil mounted on the engine block) materially reduced the 1 rouble. The outcome of this investigation will interest many motorists, a considerable percentage of whom 'are no doubt owners of short wave radio sets, and it also indicates that, by the cooperation of motor manufacturers and motor owners a source of annoyance to users of short wave radio sets can be greatly minimised. In the not distant, future it is quite likely that Government regulation will take a hand in enforcing practical methods of suppressing a nuisance that will, sooner or later, affect Government revenue from radio license fees, if not minimised.
