AIR RAIDERS
FIGHTING ON APPROACHES TO THAMES GERMAN MACHINES SHOT DOWN. PEOPLE REFUSE TO TAKE COVER. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright LONDON, November 23. In a combat last night with two German planes, one of which was shot down in the sea near the Thames estuary, gunfire lasted for 30 minutes. Over parts of the estuary warnings were sounded and air-raid wardens had the greatest difficulty in persuading people to take cover despite the machine-gun battle directly overhead. Searchlights raking the sky revealed two silvery-coloured seaplanes 3UOO feet up. An eye-witness said the seaplanes directed their fire down the searchlight beams, and then anti-air-craft guns tossed them about the sky like corks.
The Air Ministry states that only one German plane has flown in' the neighbourhood of London. It was shot, down by our fighters and its crew taken prisoner.
