FEATHERSTON
SCHOOL COMMITTED MONTHLY MEETING. (“Times-Age" Special.) At the monthly meeting of the Featherston School Committee there were present: Messrs J. W. Holland (chairman). C. C. Kenward (secretary), C. J. Carlyon, W. Jeffrey. J. Higgison. C. Buck. E. C. Murphy and J. W. Henderson. The credit balance is £6B 10s 3d. Accounts passed for payment amounted to £25 Ils Bd. Mr F. Jansen, who was secretary of the Waiorongomai school committee (which school is now merged with Featherston) wrote asking if it were possible for a representative to be a member of the Featherston School Committee. The letter had been forwarded to the Wellington Education Board and it was suggested by them that a Waiorongamai representative could be co-opted to the committee without power to vote. It was decided to ask for a representative from Waiorongomai to accept the position. The secretary of the Home and School Association advised that in response to the school committee’s invitation, the headmaster, Mr Hayes, would act as their representative at meetings of the committee. The committee was advised by the Wellington Education Board that their application for a library subsidy of £lO would receive consideration.
The Department of Health wrote asking that certain fixtures be installed in connection with the "Milk to Children” service. In considering this letter the headmaster pointed out that they were not necessary, as the contractor’s agent waited while the milk was being consumed. The letter was received. It was decided to instal an electric heating point in one of the class rooms to supply hot water. It was resolved to apply to the Featherston Borough Council for the use of its plant for repairing the asphalt at the school grounds. The headmaster advised that the primary children would be staging an operetta in the Town Hall on December 12. It was decided to hold the next meeting on December 11. CROQUET TOURNAMENT PRESENTATION OF TROPHIES The Wairarapa Croquet Tournament which has extended over several days concluded yesterday in showery weather. At the close of the games Mrs Wakely (president) presented the trophies to the winners, congratulating them on their good performances. The visitors expressed their thanks for the many kindnesses shown during the visit. Before departing the ladies presented Mrs Wakely with a beautiful piece of china ware in appreciation of her many kind actions. In the championship doubles Mesdames Polson and Bassett beat Mrs Saunders and Miss Lyford, 26-12. Early Fruit and Vegetables. New potatoes, peas, strawberries and other fruits are being gathered by local gardeners, this being about three weeks earlier than in other years. The cause of this is attributed to the absence of severe frosts, which are usual in the late spring in this district. Good warm rains fell throughout the South Wairarapa yesterday and last night and will be welcomed particularly by dairy farmers and gardeners. The dry spell has been all right for the sheep farmer, but dairy farmers state that their returns have considerably decreased as the result of the dry weather.
