PRICE OF PETROL

INCREASE OF 6D A GALLON IN AUSTRALIA DIVIDED BETWEEN GOVERNMENT AND VENDORS. RATIONING LIKELY TO BE UNNECESSARY. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. (Received This Day, 11.58 a.rn.) MELBOURNE, This Day. The retail price of- petrol will probably be raised by sixpence a gallon shortly. The increase will be made up of duty, 3d; the oil companies’ portion, 2d; and the retailers’ share, 1d a gallon. Such a rise would affect consumption to such an extent that the rationing of petrol will be unnecessary. The increase will assist the Commonwealth Government to finance its huge defence expenditure.
