MONETARY REFORM
MR J. A. LEE’S ADVOCACY. WANTS AT LEAST ONE BANK TAKEN OVER. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) PAHIATUA, This Day “I believe that unless the Government takes over at least one trading bank before next election, it will ;ioi have carried out its pledges at last election." stated Mr J. A. Lee, M.P., in an address last night on monetary reform. Mr Lee said that true democracy would be impossible till the people had control of the banking system. Speaking of "the crushing burden of international and internal debt," he said New Zealand was deep in debt because private enterprise controlled •money. "I say there is no greater lunacy than financial orthodoxy," he continued. He said farmers would want a continuation of Government marketing of produce after the war because there might be a fall in prices though today a return would be welcome. Questioned regarding suppressing the Opposition during the war, Mr Lee said he was not in favour of suppressing anybody, save a man disavowing the law preaching insurrection. “We want the fullest, unfettered right of controversy," he declared.
