"If our women would get out into the garden and hoe kumeras in the way their Maori sisters do, we would hear less of nerves and nerve strain." said Dr. H. Douglas, patron of the Hamilton Horticultural Society, at the opening of the society's rose show. "In these days of stress it is a merciful escape to get into the garden, and I am quite sure that if we gave more time to our gardens we would lead a much happier life," he added.
