EKETAHUNA

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT NIREAHA. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Nireaha Women’s Institute was presided over by Mrs Hawkins, there being a good attendance of members. The motto for the day was “One volunteer is worth ten pressed men.” and the Roll Call “Hints for Removing Stains.’’ Mrs Wilkin, one of the delegates to the Council meeting, gave a full account of the meeting, this being listened to with great interest by all present. After the business had been transacted. Mrs O’Neill gave a demonstration on making a humpty from two ends of a cheese crate. This was much appreciated by all members and a hearty vote of thanks was passed to the demonstrator. Afternoon tea was served by the hostesses, Mesdames Mason and W. Drysdale, after which the National Anthem brought a pleasant afternoon to a close. The competitions resulted as follow: —Khaki sponge, Mrs Peterson 1. Hand-worked nightdress. Mrs Drysdale 1. Best bloom, Mrs Wilkin 1. Mercury Vapour Lamps. "We have had no experience of mercury vapour lamps, and our charges for them are at least lower than those of surrounding boards,” said the secretary-manager (Mr W. F. Taylor), reporting to the Tarawa Power Board meeting on the reply of the Mayor of Eketahuna (Mr Simpson) to his quote of £lO per year for the installation and maintenance of mercury vapour lamps. Mr Simpson contended that the life of the lamps was considerably more than was allowed for by the board. Defending the price, which was the same as Pahiatua, Mr Taylor said Pahiatua had kept their old lamps, whereas Eketahuna proposed to scrap theirs, involving a loss of £35 in revenue to the Board. He thought £lO a year was a fair price.
