CARTERTON

GUN CLUB CLAY BIRD SHOOTING. ("Times-Age” Special.) The official opening of the Carterton Gun Club for tile season took place on the Taratahi Racecourse on Saturday and was held under very auspicious circumstances auguring well for a very successful season. Seventeen shooters were present and the shooting throughout the afternoon must be considered to be very good for the opening day. The wind was inclined to be tricky ana was a little baffling to some of the shooters. The operating of the trap was carried out by Mr Joe McKnight in his usual capable manner. The opening match (21 birds) was for a trophy given by the President: Mr G. A. Vincent. F. Taplin and J. Gallagher tied for the trophy with 20 kills and in the shoot off (first miss out) Gallagher dropped his second bird and Taplin made two breaks and won. The following were the scores: F. Taplin from the 18yds mark secured 20 clays, 12 with the first barrel; G. Gallagher 12yds, 20; C. E. Grey 18yds, 19; F. Allen 13yds, 18; Joe Udy 14yds 17; R. Williams 12yds, 46; J. Crawford 11 yds, 15; L. Rayner 11yds, 15; H. K. Smith 18yds, 13; A. Warren 12yds, 13; J. Lawrie 13yds, 12; G. A. Vincent 11 yds, 12; M. Hoggan 11yds 12. Twelve bird match: C. E. Gustofson, assisted by the executive committee ably controlled the meeting. The next competition will probably be held in a fortnight’s time. BOWLING CHAMPION RINK GAMES. The first of a series of champion rink games were played on Saturday and there were some interesting and close games. Afternoon tea was provided and presided over by Mesdames Callender and Beaven for which they were accorded a heaty vote of thanks. On Saturday a men’s team from the Carterton Bowling Lawn Tennis Club journey to Wellington to play their annual match against the Kelburn Club. It was an ideal day for tennis and the games were very evenly contested, the Kelburn Club winning by G matches to 4. Morning and afternoon tea and lunch were kindly provided by the ladies of the Kelburn Club and this ■ was much appreciated by the visiting team. A return match is to be played on the Carterton Courts early in February. Production Shortage. Owing to the continued dry weather and the scorching winds that have prevailed for some time, thereby affecting the yield of the dairy herds in the Wairarapa, all the cheese factories are experiencing a shortage in production. The effect is also felt on the cream supply to butter factories in this district. Farmers contend that if rain does not soon come there must be a very great shortage of hay for winter feeding. There is no growth in the grass and it is running to seed before it has grown to any height.
