The death is announced of a New Zealand journalist, Mr J. P. Whitelaw, who was on the "News Chronicle” staff, a London cablegram reports. First-class Firemen H. J. Hefford and E. J. Wiffin. of the Wellington Fire Brigade, have graduated in the Institute of Fire Engineers. Tlie deatli has occurred at Palmerston North of Mr L. A. Abraham, one of the best known figures in that city, at the age of 77 years. Yesterday was the 100th anniversary of the arrival at Waikanfie of the Rev Octavius Hadfield, who was born in the Isle of Wight in 1814, first missionary in this part of the country, and afterward Bishop of Wellington. Recent guests at the Hotel Midland, Masterton, were Messrs J. Park (Dunedin); C. F. Lunney, R. McArthur and Earwacker (Christchurch) B. Kiely (Auckland); W. Lethen (Napier); A. G. Edey, C. Lemberg, J. Mayo and A. Davies (Wellington). The Prime Minister, Mr Savage, visited the Centennial Exhibition on Saturday and spent two hours walking through the principal courts. It was his first visit to the Exhibition, his convalescence after his recent illness having prevented his attending the opening ceremony. The Very Rev G. H. McNeur. missionary in China, who will retire next year after 38 years’ service in that field, was highly complimented on his work at the recent session- of the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church of New Zealand in Christchurch. Members of the "Charlie’s Aunt” Company who stayed at the Hotel Midland during their season in Masterton were: —Mr and Mrs Don Nicol, Misses Althea Siddons, Maisie Wallace, Mary Duncan. Leal Douglas, Shirley Ann Richards, Messrs John Fleeting and Murray Gibbs. Mr M. S. Galloway, secretary of the Wellington Red Cross Society for the last 19 years, tendered his resignation at a meeting of the society recently, Mr Galloway resigned to take up the position of Dominion secretary of the New Zealand Red Cross Society. He was congratulated on obtaining his new appointment and appreciation was expressed of his work for the society. Squadron-Leader Barry S. Nicholl. formerly of Masterton. who recently arrived from England on transfer to the Royal New Zealand Air Force, has been appointed chief instructor ai Woodbourne, Blenheim, and will begin his duties there soon. Squadron-Leader Nicholl. who is accompanied by his wife and small daughter, is a son of Mrs W. S. W. McGowan, Wadestown, Wellington, and a brother of Mr R. H. Nicholl. Wellington, the well-known rille shot.'
