WOMEN’S INSTITUTE BIRTHDAY DANCE AT RONGOKOKAKO. (“Times-Age” Special.) The Rongokokako Women’s Institute celebrated its fourth birthday dance in the hall when there was a large attendance of local people and visitors from surrounding districts were well represented. Excellent music was supplied by Mrs Roach and Mr D. Thompson. extras being contributed by Mr Winter and a Hamua visitor. After a most enjoyable supper, the president, Mrs Sigvertsen, thanked all present for making the evening such a success and also thanked Mrs Schormann for making the birthday cake and Mrs Payne for icing it so beautifully. She then called on Mrs Byers, the oldest member, to light the candles and the youngest member, Miss E. Sigbertsen, to blow them out, and Mrs Hobbs (Hamua) to cut the cake. Items during the evening were contributed as follow: A play, “The Wonderful Lamp,” by junior members; songs by Miss J. Edwards; mandolin and piano solos and song by the Jones family; songs by Miss J. Carter; guitar solos by Miss D. Nagel. These items were much appreciated by all. Novelty dances were won by Mr and Mrs G. Farrow (Monte Carlo); Miss J. > Sorensen -and Mr C. Ramsay (lucky partners); Mrs Roach and Mr Thompson (lucky spot). The M’s.C., Mr J. Payne and Mr F. Sigvertsen, kept the dancing going at full swing until the early hours of the morning. Enjoyable Concert. The concert given in the Oddfellows’ Hall by the Young Girls’ Party from Pahiatua in connection with the Eketahuna Methodist Golden Jubilee effort, was a decided success. The playlets and groups of songs were especial favourites with the audience while others whb delighted with their efforts were Miss Betty Curry, Miss Muriel Smith, Miss Collister, Miss Joy Yewen. The words of the opening chorus were composed by Miss Lawrence, of Hukanui. Mr. Gardner was announcer and Mr. L. Hartley accompanist. An Old Landmark Disappears. A landmark for the past 50 - years known as Polling’s Hotel has been dismantled. In by-gone years the hotel was a great sporting centre, Mr and Mrs F. Felling being strong supporters of football and other outdoor pastimes. The late Mr Frank Pelling was one of the original members of the Red Star Football Club, of Masterton, being a player in its first fifteen and coach for some years. Mr Pelling also represented Wairarapa and the Bush on many occasions on the football field, being one of the finest forwards in the Wellington province. His brother, Mr E. Pelling, also played for many years for the Red Star Football Club and the Wairarapa representatives.
