The death occurred yesterday at Ohakune Junction of Mr Thomas Edward Hutchins, formerly of Woodville, at the age of 91 years. Messrs Nelson and J. Tyrell (Palmerston North); D. A. Ewen (Wellington) are among the guests staying at the Hotel Midland, Masterton. The wedding will take place in England today of Mr C. E. Malfroy, New Zealand Davis Cup player and former Dominion tennis champion, to Miss Sybil Gordon, Bordesmead, Loughton, Essex. Mr T. B. Clarke. Superintendent of the Masterton Fire Brigade, who is at present an inmate of the Masterton Hospital, is reported to be making good progress towards complete recovery. Guests at the Prince of Wales Hotel, Masterton, recently, have been Messrs P. Cope (Palmerston North). Campbell, W. B. Manning. H. L. Leake, E. E. Cole, F. G. Hood. J. M. Olsen and G. R. Watson (Wellington).
Major C. V. Sugden. N.Z.S.C. adjutant Ist Battalion. Canterbury Regiment. and formerly of Masterton, has been transferred to the North Island on temporary duty. He will return to Christchurch in three weeks’ time.
At its concluding session in Wellington yesterday the conference of the Associated Chambers of Commerce of New Zealand elected Mr W. S. Mac Gibbon (Canterbury) president and Mr G. Fraser (Taranaki) vice-president, and decided that the next annual conference should be held in New Plymouth. Word has been received in Westport that Pilot Officer Hugh Drummond, aged 26 years, sori of Mr and Mrs F. K. Drummond. Inangahua Junction, was killed in Engand. He was trained at Greymouth under Flight-Lieutenant W. F. Parke, and was regarded as one of his most apt pupils. He left for England in December. 1938. The Empire Hotel (Masterton) has had. recently the following guests: Messrs Whitehead. Manners, Worstead, and McDonald (Auckland), Raeburn and J. Carter (Wanganui), Barion (Hastings), E. H. Smith (Napier), Walshan (Hawke’s Bay); Hartog, Clegg, Dudley and Edmunds (Palmerston North). Mrs Gladden. Messrs Bardell. Emery, Heard. Field, R. D. McArthur. Burnett and Lubransky (Wellington).
An unusual party to celebrate his eightieth birthday was held a few days ago by Mr J. Siddels, Wanganui. It consisted of a luncheon at which all but two of the guests were older than their host, one having passed the age of 90. The exceptions were the mayor of Wanganui, Mr Rogers, and Mr Cotterill, M.P. Mr Siddels, who was for many years in the Police Force and retired in 1905 with the rank of sergeant, began his career in the Armed Constabulary, arid four comrades of more than 60 years ago sat down to luncheon with him.
