MAGISTRATE’S COURT

BUSINESS AT FORTNIGHTLY SITTING. MOTORING AND OTHER OFFENCES. The fortnightly sitting of the Masterton Magistrate’s Court was held today before Mr H. P. Lawry, S.M. For cutting a corner in his motor vehicle at the intersection of Cole and Coradine streets on October 24, George Samuel Foreman was fined £1 and costs 10s. Senior-Sergeant G. A. Doggett said the case was not a very bad one but a slight collision had occurred with a Chinese fruiterer. Charged with operating a motor van at Masterton on November 24, while the brakes were not in compliance with the regulations, Everett Ernest Dew was fined £1 and costs. John McGregor (Borough Traffic Inspector) proceeded against George Thohias Sullivan on a charge of operating a vehicle without a heavy traffic licence in Queen Street, on November 8. Defendant was fined £2 and costs 10s. Clarence Percy Sunnex, William Garry Hopkins. and Harry Sydney Cadwallader were charged with exceeding a speed of 30 miles per hour in High Street. Masterton. on October 26. A fine of £2 and costs 10s was imposed in each case. The informations were laid by lhe Borough Traffic Inspector. The Transport Traffic Inspector, Mr W. G. Milne, proceeded against Richard Webber for carrying on a passenger service between Masterton and Opaki Racecourse on October 12, otherwise than pursuant to the authority of a passenger service licence issued under the Transport Licensing Act, 1931. Defendant was fined 10s. with 10s costs. Defendant said the offence was due to a misunderstanding on his part. For permitting a cow and two calves to wander on the Masterton-Castle-point Highway, at Peach’ Grove, on October 28. Ernest Harold Schofield was fined £1 and costs 12s. CIVIL CASES. Judgment for plaintiff by default was given in the following undefended civil cases:—Thomas Hanley v Gordon Burt, claim £0 17s 3d, costs £1 13s 6d; Mascot Motors Ltd v J. Morris, claim £lO 19s lOd. costs £3 Is; E. J. Martin v W. A. Russell, claim £ll 10s, costs £2 17s: Bullick-Blackmore Ltd v L. Peterson, claim £1 13s, costs 8s; C. A. Greenwood v A. F. Briant, claim £1 Us 3d costs Bs.
