NAVAL EFFICIENCY

INTERCEPTION OF GERMAN SHIPS. TRYING TO SLIP HOME. (British Official Wireless.) RUGBY. November 14. The interception by warships of the German vessels Mecklenburg and Parana is regarded in British Naval circles as a demonstration of the efficiency of the British Naval patrol. The ships were attempting to use bad weather and northern mists to reach Norwegian territorial waters on their way to Germany and the Mecklenburg was disguised as a Dutch ship, the Hoogkerck. It is thought that the action of these ships, which had been sheltering in South American ports, in leaving neutral waters and their attempt to evade the British patrol were due to their inability to pay harbour dues, which are very heavy, thereby throwing a revealing light on the German lack of foreign currency.
