COUNTY AFFAIRS

MEETING OF MASTERTON COUNCIL. BUSINESS BEFORE FINANCE COMMITTEE. At a meeting of the finance committee of the Masterton County Council held this morning, the County Clerk Mr J. C. D. Mackley. reported that the state of the bank accounts at October 31 was: —County Fund. debit. £7588; Bridge Loan £14,500. 1938, credit £12.574. £ll.OOO of which was on fixed deposit; Bridge Fund, credit £659. The receipts since the last meeting were £944 and subsidies outstanding and due by the Government totalled £3BBB. Accounts totalling £526-1 were recommended for payment. Some consideration was given to the provisions of the Rural Housing Act. 1939. providing for financing the erection of dwellings for farmers and farm workers. It was understood that regulations were in course of preparation by the State Advances Corporation setting out in detail the way in which money would be provided out. of the housing account to enable local bodies to make advances under the Act. A circular letter was received from the secretary of the New Zealand Counties' Association making known the decision of the joint meeting of representatives of the Municipal Association and the New Zealand Counties Association, formulating recommendations relating to county council officers and regular employees on military service, and giving a lead to local authorities in order to secure uniform treatment for the men concerned. The recommendations were agreed to. The clerk, Mr Mackley. who is secretary of the Wellington district branch of the New Zealand Institute of County Clerks, was given permission to attend the annual conference, to be held at Palmerston North on November 23. It was decided .that members of the cutside stall entitled to annual holidays be granted same from Friday December 22. to Tuesday. January 2 inclusive. It was agreed that the next meeting of the council be held on Tuesday. December 5, instead of December 12.
