SENSATIONAL GOLF
MANY SURPRISES TODAY AT MIRAMAR DEFEAT OF TITLE HOLDER. EWEN & REILLY ALSO OUT. (By Telegraph—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, This Day. Surprises came thick and fast in the first round play in the amateur and professional championships at Miramar today, when the New Zealand golf tournament was continued in good weather. The first disaster was the defeat of Pax Smith, the title-holder, other early casualties being Ewen and Reilly. The amateurs turned on sensational golf, as is shown by the sixtyeights of Mortland and Taylor.
Interest in the professional championship promises to be well sustained. Guy, last year's runner-up to Fuller (who did not qualify) has been playing sensational golf at the present tournament. and Murray, Mclntosh Shaw and Weir promise to be his most serious rivals. Results are:— Professional Championship.
First round: Allbon beat Guy, 1 up; Murray beat Weir, 1 up at the nineteenth: James Galloway beat Butters. 2 up; George Watt beat A. Dyke, 1 up; Mclntosh beat J. Clements, 2 and 2. Amateur Championship.
First round: Hornabrook beat Sime, 5/3; Jeffery beat E. Henderson, 1 up at the twenty-first; Nash beat PaxSmith, 2/1; K. Smith beat Ewen, 1 up at the twentieth; Taylor beat Roberts. 4/3; fe. Kitto beat Reilly, 2/1; L. Quinn beat Morrison, 3/2: Glading beat Cromb, 5/4; Mortland beat Dixon, 6/5; Glading beat Wagg. 4/3; A. Kitto bea l Doneghue, 1 up at the nineteenth; Holland beat Duncan, 5/3; H. Black bea J Whyte, 2/1; Tunnell beat J. Black, 2 up: P. Quinn beat Cameron, 2 up; Silk beat Shelly, 4/3.
