TURF NEWS AND NOTES

CURRENT TOPICS FROM STABLE AND COURSE Final Day at Riccarton METROPOLITAN TO, CENTREPOISE BIRTHDAY BOY WINS AT AVONDALE A RUNAWAY VICTORY TO DE FRIEND AT NAPIER (BY “CARBINE.”) The C.J.C. meeting was brought to a conclusion at Riccarton on Saturday when Centrepoise brought off a surprise by winning the Metropolitan Handicao in a decisive manner. Centrepoise came through down the straight and cut down the opposition, though Norseman put in a determined late run to secure second money. The King George Handicap at the Avondale meeting was won by Birthday Boy in the last few strides to cut down Balinavar by a head. Birthday Boy was a strong favourite and ran exceptionally well. At the Napier Park meeting De Friend had a runaway victory in the Waiohiki Stakes. Starting at a short price he took the lead at the start and won easily by six lengths.

Centrepoise's Excellent Effort. In the Metropolitan Handicap at Riccarton on Saturday, Centrepoise was responsible for a most spectacular effort, as he did not have too good a run when pressure became necessary. Norseman again showed his usefulness by his placing, and paid another good dividend. Capricious was unlucky, as she was badly stopped for a few chains going out of the straight, and was well back by the time she settled down again., Her finishing run was a feature of the race. Beaupartir showed promise when .he ran up to Yours Truly and Centrepoise at the distance, but the run may have been made too soon, as he weakened badly in another few strides. Yours Truly was proclaimed the winner early in the run home, but was no doubt hampered when squeezed in between Beaupartir and Centrepoise. Slowly Run Race. The King George Handicap at Avondale on Saturday was very slowly run in the early stages and in the sprint over the last three furlongs Birthday Boy got up in the last few strides to head Balinavar. The latter acted as pacemaker from Birthday Boy, Royal Appellant, Scotland, Palmint, and Raceline, and the field raced in this order at length intervals till the straight entrance. Balinavar was joined by Birthday Boy inside the last furlong and they fought out an exciting finish well clear of Royal Appellant, who was followed by Pahnint and Raceline. Birthday Eoy was a strong favourite and he did his task well. Balinavar is likely to improve with the race, and Royal Appellant may do better in a truly-run race. Win From End to End. De Friend. _ who started at a short price, scored'"'a runaway win in the Waiohiki Stakes at the ( Napier meeting. He was moving in when the barrier rose, immediately went to the front and increased his lead as the race progressed, finally running in a winner six lengths ahead of the next best, the aged Limbohm, who comfortably beat the others. Limbohm, who ,was the outsider and returned a good dividend, came from a long way back, finishing strongly. Successful Jockeys at Riccarton. The most successful horsemen at the C.J.C. meeting were A. Messervy and P. Atkins, each with four wins. A. E. Ellis was next with three wins, and C. Wilson, T. Green, W. J. Mudford, P. Spratt, and W. J. Broughton each rode two winners.
