CARTERTON
WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT CARTERTON. (“Times-Age” Special.) A meeting of the Carterton Women’s Institute was held in the Masonic Hall Carterton, when Mrs H. Knutson presided over a good attendance of members. The meeting opened with the singing of the Ode to Friendship followed by the Aspiration and the Prayer for Peace. A letter was read from the Director of the N.Z. Institute for the Blind thanking the Carterton Women’s Institute for conducting the profitable sale of basketware at the recent Carterton Show. The president also thanked the members who assisted in the sale.
Invitations were received from the Upper Plain Women’s Institute to a birthday party on November 15, and from the Carterton League of Mothers to “Fathers’ Night’’ on November 16. It was arranged that the Institute be represented at both gatherings. It was announced that a Christmas Party with gifts for children of Institute members would take place at the December meeting. Mrs F. Peterson gave an interesting report of the half-yearly council meeting of the Wairarapa Federation held in Martinborough on October 12, and was thanked by the president and presented with a shoulder spray. Two vocal duets by Mrs V. L. Robinson and Miss Surtees were very much enjoyed. The results of the competitions are as follow: —Shortbread, Mrs W. S. Steven, 1; Mrs F. T. Beaven, 2; Mrs A. T. Hawke, 3. Christmas novelty, Mrs W. S. Steven (felt table mats), 1; Mrs A. L. Knutson (dressing table doll), 2; Mrs G. Stefl’ert (organdie pincushion and calendar). 3. An amusing competition on surnames was won by Mrs H. J. Brown. A demonstration on weaving green flax into baskets of various shapes and design was given by Mesdames Gallon (2), H. Bain and Groube, members of the Matarawa-Dalefield Institute, and was very keenly followed by the members. At the conclusion the president, on behalf of the members, thanked the ladies and presented each with a dainty shoulder spray. The meeting closed with the singing of the National Anthem.
TENNIS TOURNAMENT DRAW FOR SATURDAY. The following is the draw for a combined doubles handicap tournament to be held on Saturday, at 1.30 p.m. Games are 31 points up advantage. Couling will take for his text “Graven Hands” at the morning services and “Iron Gates” at the evening session. He will also preach at West Taratahi in the afternoon. Church of England services conducted by the Rev. W. F. Stent will be held at Gladstone at 11 a.m. and at Parkvale at 2 p.m. on Sunday next.
ODD FELLOWSHIP LOYAL WAIRARAPA P.G. LODGE. P.G. Bro. W. A. Palmer presided over a representative number of members of various lodges in Wairarapa at a meeting held in the Odd Fellows’ Hall, Featherston, last evening. Apologies for absence were received from Bros. C. E. White, J. S. Viles, P. M. Smith, and E. Moroney. One candidate from Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, Carterton. was advanced to the Most Honourable Purple Degree and lecture and accorded a hearty welcome. Accounts amounting to 15s 2d were passed for payment. The examining officers, G.D.G.M. Bro. C. J. DeLacey, and P.G's., Bros. G. S. Bruce and R. Baikie, submitted their report regarding the recent ritual examination and awarded the honours to officers of Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, Carterton, with 256“ marks out of a maximum of 270; Loyal Masterton gaining 249 points. The president extended his congratulations to Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge, and the secretary was authorised to write congratulating the lodge officers for their success. A vote of thanks was accorded the examiners for their work. P.D.G.M. Bro. C. J. DeLacey and P.G’s. Bros. R. Baikie and G. S. Bruce were asked to examine Loyal Masterton Juvenile Lodge and Loyal Rose of Valley Juvenile Lodge in ritual work, the former on Tuesday next and the latter on Thursday of next week. A circular letter from Loyal Dani nevirke Lodge relative to hospital treatment, i.e., X-ray, massage, dress-
ings and ambulance, was discussed at length and it was resolved to provide each lodge in the Wellington district with a copy of the circular and solicit an expression of opinion relative to the same, with a view to submitting it to Wellington district Odd Fellows’ Hospital Association's management committee for their consideration. It was resolved to extend an invitation to the officers and members of Loyal Tararua Past Grands' Lodge to be present at the next meeting of the Wairarapa Lodge to be held in Masterton in January or early February. It was resolved that the Loyal Heart of Oak Lodge be presented with the ritual shield by the president 01. the Past Grands' Lodge on Monday. November 27. At the conclusion of business Loyal Unity Lodge kindly provided supper, which was much appreciated.
ST. MARK’S CHURCH UNVEILING OF MEMORIAL. On Sunday next at 7 p.m. the unveiling of a memorial shrine to the memory of Thomas Ficlden Taylor, late City Missioner and Chaplain to the Expeditionary Forces in the 1914-18 war. will be performed by the Ven. Win. Bulloch.. The returned soldiers will parade lor the occasion.
