Third Day of Riccarton Carnival

CANTERBURY CUP GOES TO ROYAL CHSEF

MONTESSA WINS OAKS IN FINE STYLE

(BY

"CARBINE.”)

The third day of the Riccarton carnival Royal Chief proved too sold and seasoned a horse for the favourite Beaupartit, in the Canterbury Cup. Royal Chief put in a great final run to cut down the field and register a very decisive win. Beaupartir just managed to head the much improved Baran in the last hundred yards for second place. It was a true run race. In the New Zealand Oaks the Brazen filly Montessa won in good style. She was always well placed and at the business end of the race came up to Anita Foe, the leader, wearing her down to win by half a length. It is quite on the cards that had Classform received a better passage she may have proved a serious menace to Montessa, as-she was going strongly at the finish. The favourite, Authoress, finished third last while Winning Rival and Asia were never really dangerous.

Turn Should Soon Come. Yogi, a brother of Peerless, is fast getting into form, and his turn should soon come. He has shaped nicely at Riccarton. Kinsman Improving. Kinsman is improving with racing and his running at Riccarton would indicate that he may salute the judge . before long. A Metropolitan Prospect. Siegmund’s running at Riccarton suggests him as a Metropolitan prospect for Saturday. A Slow Beginner. If Settlement only possessed the ability to start away from the barrier more smartly he would soon be among the placed horses. Riccarton form suggests this. Much Above the Average. Form at Riccarton shows that Globe Trotter is a three-year-old much above the average. Queen Dorothy Well. Queen Dorothy is in good fettle just now and should soon be on the winning list. Her Riccarton runs will doubtless improve her condition. Not at her Best. Winning Rival was done with after a mile in the C.J.C. Derby, but. is not yet at her best. She will be worth keeping an eye on. Will Win Plenty of Races. Moorsotis ran so well at Riccarton that she should win plenty of races this season. Weight-for-age Crawls. It is rarely that weight-for-age races over a distance are not run at a muddling pace and more often than, not the blame is put on the jockeys. The following comments macle by a jockey after a weight-for-age race at the recent Randwick carnival are therefore interesting: ■ "You cannot blame ' us for what happened today,” he said. "We ride to instructions, and naturally we have to do as we are told. The trouble is that the weight-for-age contestants at this carnival are horses who are accustomed to having the pace made for them. They are true stayers, and it is not their role to make the pace. With horses capable of setting a fast pace missing, it merely becomes a battle of tactics among the riders themselves. No one wants to do anything early that is likely to give the other riders an advantage, and that was why it was merely a walking match for the best part of the journey today. I’ll admit they are not trulyrun races, but. what can you do?”

Stakes Increased. In spite of the estimated loss of close on £3OO due to the cancellation of the 1 per cent dividend tax, the Waikouaiti Racing Club has increased the stakes for its annual race meeting on New Year’s Day by £205, making the total distribution £1720. The Waikouaiti Cup stake has been raised by £lOO to £6OO, and the Orbell Handicap by £25 to £225, and every other race has been increased by approximately £l5. The Oamaru Jockey Club’s programme for the following day will be the same as last year, with stakes totalling close on £l2OO.

Claimed as Best Two-year-old. According to the opinion of one who saw him race at Auckland, Nightbeam is the best two-year-old seen this season. The opinion was, however, expressed by one who saw only the final day at Trentham. It is stated that Nightbeam fought his way through to get up and win the Musket Stakes in 60 4-5. Nightbeam is a bay colt by Night Raid from Lady Burleigh, by Paladin—Tormentor, by Martian—Torquato, by Sir Archibald. Nightbeam’s record is one start, one win.

Dominion Trotting Winners. The Stratton Cup, the principal event at the Western Australian Trotting Association's meeting at Gloucester Park, Perth, on October 3, was won by Will o’ the Wisp, with Mountain Flight second and Gentle Bobbie third. The track was heavy, the winner taking 4.421 off a 4.30 mark. At a second meeting, on October 7. New Zealand-bred horses were well to the fore. Mountain Flight winning the Kununoppin Handicap, Kay Francis was successul in the Arulen Handicap, and Great Admiral scored in the Trayning Handicap. Stylist Hope, which won the Nungarin Handicap, is a daughter of the New Zealand Trotting Cup winner Great Hope. Another Dominion victory was recorded at Fremantle, when the 18-year-old Dillon Huon won the Silas Handicap, of 13 furlongs, from 60yds bhd. Since going to Western Australia, he has started in 219 races for 14 firsts, 11 seconds, and 15 thirds. New Zealand-bred pacers now racing in Perth and which are entered for the Championships are Biondi, Rollo, Sunny Morn, Kay Francis, Supertax, Tempest and Cloudy Range.
