CARTERTON

WOMEN’S INSTITUTE MEETING AT PARKVALE. (“Times-Age” Special.) The monthly meeting of the Parkvale Women’s Institute was held in the Parkvale Hall, yesterday, Mrs N. Peacock presiding over a good attendance. The meeting was opened with the Ode to Friendship, tlje Aspiration and a prayer for peace. An interesting report was 1 given by Mrs W. Adlam on the Federation meeting recently held at Martjinborough. Mrs Adlam was accorded a hearty vote, of thanks for her interesting report. Invitations were received to a social afternoon at Kahautara, and to the Upper Plain birthday party next week. Members were chosen to represent the Institute at these meetings. It was decided to hold the children’s Christmas Tree Party on Saturday, December 9, final arrangements being made for this function. Mrs L. Rayner kindly offered to give the Christmas tree.

A most interesting demonstration on tapestry work was given by one of the members, Mrs H. Kirk. She had some beautifully made articles on display, and these were greatly admired by members. Mrs Kirk was accorded a hearty vote of thanks for her interesting demonstration. A new member, Mrs F. Stubbs, was elected.

The monthly competitions were judged by Mrs T. C. I. Kelly, a visitor, and Mrs F. Stubbs. The results were as follow: —Seniors: Gems. Mrs B. Renall 1, Mrs L. Rayner 2, and Mrs J. Rayner 3. Best rose, Mrs E. McGarvie 1, Mrs E. T. Bliss 2, Mrs L. Rayner 3. Juniors —Best Christmas gift, Miss A. Williams (cane tray), 1, Miss M. Adlam (pictures), 2, Mrs F. Rayner (handkerchief satchet), 3. Best flower, Miss S. Rayner 1, Miss A. Williams 2, N(iss L. Rayner 3.

An interesting talk on Red Cross meeting was given by the Institute representative, Mrs J. Rayner. A competition arranged by Miss L. Rayner was won by Mrs T. C. S. Kelly. The hostesses fox' the afternoon were Mesdames L. Johnston, R. Williams and C. Swinn. A very enjoyable gathering was brought to a conclusion by the singing of the National Anthem.

BOWLING MASSON CUP COMPETITION. A game was played on the Carterton green last evening when the holders Messrs Callender, Robertson, Beale and Tucker (s), who stalled off the first challenge by a drawn game played recently, met Messrs Smith, Boyne, De Lacey and Barber (s) in a further challenge, and were defeated by 18-14. The game was a very interesting one throughout. On the sixth end the game was 3-all, on the 9th, 6-all, on the 17th, 13-all. Thereafter the challengers took the lead and won by 4 points.

SHIELD AND BOOTH CUP TEAMS. The following teams will represent Carterton Bowling Club in a match for the Booth Cup and Duthie Shield on Saturday next:— At Carterton: —E. Smith, Bain. Martin, G. Hart (s); J. Harris, Underhill, Riggs, Hughan (s). At the Park —Callender, Robertson, De Lacey, Barber (s); Harrington, Boyne, R. Thompson, Tucker (s). Shield at Carterton —Hawker, Matson, Simmonds, Sorenson (s). Friendly game at Park—W. Steven, Newbould. Beale, Stent (s). Cars will leave Carterton at 1.30 o’clock.

FIRE BRIGADE ANNUAL TRAINING. Members of the Carterton Fire Brigade have commenced their annual training in view of the Brigade competitions which will shortly be decided.

BOY SCOUTS CARD TOURNAMENT. The weekly card tournament in connection with the Boy Scout movement was held last evening, there being a good attendance. The prize winners were: Ladies, Mrs W. Ticehurst, 1: Mrs M. E. Mellish, 2. Men, K. Hodder, 1; M. Ticehurst. Personal. The young son of Mr and Mrs G. S. Bruce, of Carterton, was taken to Croydon hospital on Tuesday evening and operated upon for appendicitis. He is doing as well as can be expected.
