Stamina, combined with a light weight gained the day in the Melbourne Cup for Rivette, who scored the most popular victory for many years.’ Rivette emulated Posiedon and The Trump by winning two cups in the one season. She is the first'mare to accomplish the feat. Maikai, who finished second, made a game effort. He ran wide out most of the way, and otherwise may have gained the honours.
Catalogue met with interference early which settled his chance. Beau Vite threatened danger two furlongs from home but weakened and finished eighth, just behind Wilson, who did best of the three-year-olds. Reading failed to stay. Mosaic was never a possibility and disappointed his supporters. Cooranga and Buzalong caused surprise by their good efforts. The winner was bred by her ownertrainer, Harrly Bamber. He raced her dam, who cost 200 guineas and won many important pony races. Gold Salute was scratched for the Cup at 12.25 p.m. Soltoi was also scratched. The New Zealand-bred AVhernside led over the last mile in the Cup Hurdle and withstood a protest against interference at the last hurdle. Dark David ran a good race. Cheery Jack was troubled by his weight. He will be offered, for sale on Friday.
Parodier broke the hoodoo on horses drawn on the outside rails of the straight six by winning the Railway Highweight from barrier position number 20. He finished well to beat Eligible. Caesar went a game race, but weakened. National was never dangerous. Parodier won the Highweight two years ago. Trueness scored her third victory in four starts by winning the Mimosa Stakes. She was prominent all the way. Ten O'clock ran a good race. Knight’s Armour set a great pace early, but weakened. Grantley, who was poorly placed early, outstayed his opponents in the Steeplechase. Sea King ran a game race. Musical David battled on gamely after making the pace early. The race provided a chapter of accidents. Bozsago. Last End. Lome, Gay Beer, and Pambo fell.
Rex Felt, who was always well placed, had an easy win in the Yan Yean Stakes. Creditor, who ran second, was unplaced in the Highweight earlier. Tuhitarara was a moderate third. Crojick and Bakshaw got away badly, and were never dangerous. The weather was fine and the track holding. There was an enormous attendance. Results: — Cup Hurdles Race, 2m: Whernside. 9.13 (L. Gilltown made the early pace, Btizalong, L'Aiglon. Reading. Beau Vite and Pantier being nicely placed. Rivette was well back on the rails, with Maikai outside. Rivette moved through on the inside to fourth place at the turn. L'Aiglon led into the straight, but Rivette took charge a furlong from home and beat the fast-finishing Maikai by half a length. Pantier was three-quar-ters of a length away and then came Respirator. Cooranga, Buzalong. Wilson. Beau Vile. L'Aiglon and Mosaic, with Billposter last. The Trump broke down and Ortelle’s Star fell.
