Racing Career Over. It is reported from Awapuni that the racing career of Kahui is finished; that he broke away last week and collided with a fence; and that he chipped a piece off a stifle; and that there is little if any chance that he "will ever recover from the injury. Trained by L. Knapp and owned by Mr J. Brice, of Fern Flats, Marton, Kahui was a big four-year-old chestnut by Colossus out of Lady Faye, and many competent judges considered him one of the best hacks trained at Awapuni for a long time. His loss will be a severe blow to Mr Brice. Kahui had two races last season and he won the second of them. This season he started off with a win over six furlongs at the Foxton meeting and after failing on the first day of the Wellington meeting he beat all but Sternchase in the Belmont Handicap on the second day.
Earnings of Sternchase. Sternchase, who runs out his hack nominations at the Riccarton meeting, has, since he commenced racing last season, won four races to the value of £666, while he has earned in place money £l5O, making a total of £Bl6.
Half Brother of Lady Leigh. Knight Commander, who won two highweight races last week, is .a half-brother to Lady Leigh. His dam Arrowlet is by Arrowsmith from Lady Minerva, a daughter of Lady Lilian. Minerva is also the dam of Minerval, Winkle’s Best and Thermidor.
Reay Bridge Destroyed. It is reported from Gisborne that while contesting the Heston Handicap at the Hunt Club meeting, Reay Bridge received an injury to his fetlock which later necessitated his destruction.
The Hawk’s 21st. Birthday. ..The Hawk,.who at one time held the Australian and New Zealand mile record, and who won 304- races for £28,201 in prize money, recently celebrated his 21st birthday. Though it is ten years since he has seen a racecourse, the years have treated him kindly, arid when paraded at Hastings yesterday afternoon he gave the impression of a horse resuming training rather than one whose deeds on the turf belong to a past decade.
New Zealand Cup Items. The only horse to win a New Zealand Cup with 9.0 or more is Nightmarch, 9.6. The lowest winning weight has been 6.7, carried by Fusilade. Tirailleur, a crack three-year-old, was weighted at 6.5, but carried 31b overweight. When the main event at Riccarton was known as the Canterbury Jockey Club Handicap, Mata won with 6.3, and Flying Jib, Kakapo and Welcome Jack with 6.5.
R. J. Mason prepared four Cup winners, the quartet being Spade Guinea (his own property), Noctuiform, Grand Rapids and Vice-admiral. R. Derrett, S. Lindsay, H. Gray and L. J. Ellis each rode three winners of the race. The oldest winner of the New Zealand Cup was Lady Zetland (nine); and only twice has the race been won by eight-year-olds, British Lion and Sunart.
Thermidor May Win. Thermidor may train on to win a race during the balance of the Cup meeting, as she looks well and should be improved by her run in the chief event.
New Zealand Trotting Cup. The race for the New Zealand Trotting Cup yesterday was a good one. but! devoid of any great excitement. It was] robbed of a lot of its interest by the well-backed Australian horse Lawn Derby, pacing free-legged, breaking up in the first furlong and losing all chance. He went after the field over a furlong away, and, in spite of this handicap, paced a great race afterward and beat several horses home. The event was won by the 1937 winner, Lucky Jack, who also ran second last year to Morello, so that he has clinched his claim to be considered the best two-mile pacer in the Dominion. Lucky Jack's win was achieved through a solid exhibition of stamina. He was away well and occupied a good position throughout the running. He was going up on the outside of the leading bunch as they ran round the home turn the last time. He continued a brilliant effort till he had got into third place in behind Colonal Grattan and Gallant Knight at the half-mile, and when heads were turned for home, he drew to the front and stayed on to beat strong challenges by the bracketed pair. Cantat and Blair Athol.

Metropolitan Trotting Meeting NEW ZEALAND CUP WON BY LUCKY JACK RACING CARNIVAL AT FLEMINGTON RIVETTE SCORES IN THE MELBOURNE CUP
The great trotting event in the Dominion, the New Zealand Cup, was decided at Addington yesterday and resulted in a win for Lucky Jack. The race was attended by a tragedy. Colonel Grattan lost his driver, McDermott, at the half-mile post. McDermott was picked up and taken to the hospital where he later died from his injuries. The racing carnival at Remington yesterday saw the Melbourne Cup go to Rivette, who emulated the feat of Posiedon and The Trump by winning two cups in one season. Catalogue was interfered with early in the race and blocked out of ail chance of winning.
