BALTIC EXODUS
BALTS LEAVE LATVIA FOR POLAND. OVERLOADED SHIP RUNS AGROUND. By Telegraph—Press Association —Copyright. RIGA, November 6. The first shipload of Latvian Balts as distinct from Reich Germans have sailed for Gdynia aboard the German vessel Steuben, which 'crammed 2856 passengers into accommodation intended for 1800. She started yesterday, but ran aground and was towed off today.
Five thousand Balts have changed their allegiance, and their transportation is proceeding rapidly. Al! males between 20 and 26 have been summoned for compulsory labour service, the voluntary system having failed. All doctors and lawyers under 60, and nurses under 49 are called up. It is questionable whether this is lawful, but the Latvians are not interfering, because those affected will soon be German citizens.
The Balts are people of Germ: nic extraction who for many centuries have had their home in Latvia.
