GOLF
master™ championships DR N. H. PRIOR WINS JUNIOR TITLE. . I KEEN CONTEST WITH .1. SHEARER. I I i (By "Handicapper.') Very considerable interest this year; was taken ■in the final of the junior championship, as the finalists were two of the older members of the Club who have rendered good service and both of whom arc very popular. The winner of the top half was Jim Shearer and the winner of the bottom half Dr N. H. Prior. These two met over 36 holes last Thursday In the morning round. Shearer got right into his stride and with a succession of bogies was soon into the lead. By steady golf in the back half he increased his lead until at the luncheon adjournment he was five up. Apparently, the doctor, up to this stage, had been short in his practice swings but during the luncheon adjournment this was pointed out to him and in the afternoon he steadied down considerably. With the aid of the extra practice swings he steadily reduced Shearer’s lead until by the 14th hole he had drawn square. The last four holes developed into a battle royal, but by this time Dr Prior was on his mettle and felt that his opponent was falling away. With a bogey at the 16th and 17th the match was clinched, the doctor finally winning a great uphill fight by two and one. This match was probably the most popular finish in this competition for years and both the winner and the runner-up received the heartiest congratulations of the whole club.
The success in the senior championship, of T. H. Horton was very pleasing and Dick Cameron, as runner-up is deserving of all credit for his hard work and practice during the season. D. H. Stratton certainly deserves all credit for winning the intermediate championship. In the semi-final he had a tough go with L. Kebblewhite. Both these players are on the nine mark, Stratton only getting home oh the 21st green. In the final with G Brown over 36 holes, Stratton was playing a man on the 12 mark, but Brown is an excellent match player and put up a good fight against strong odds.
■ R. Boys, on the six mark, put up a good performance in winning the captain’s trophy. In winning this event he was taken to the 19th in the semifinal by E. B. Booth, on the seven mark. In the final over 36 holes with E. Henderson, on the three mark, Boys easily won. He played exceptionally brilliant golf to win by 9 and 7.
